Bookcity was founded in 1989 under the mission of establishing a cornerstone of knowledge and information - the core elements of national development - and of developing a cultural counteractive power with initiative, seeking for the modernization of the publication industry.
The vision of the Bookcity is to combine all the processes of planning, design, printing, logistics, and distribution as a one-stop process. Bookcity, seeking for the development of the domestic publication industry, will grow further into the international cultural hub through its merits of eco-friendly cultural space and exemplary architectural environment under which it is located.

Bookcity is itself a large exhibition hall of architecture with special stories, which shows that architecture is not just the outer appearance but a space containing our life. This is fundamentally different from the past practice of making cities that gave priority to filling space. Places that contain our lives bear greater importance than the shape of buildings, and from a certain perspective these places form architecture. Following the architectural design guideline of Bookcity based on community, all architectural activities serve not only as buildings for making books, but also as buildings that consider people who work, live and visit them.

Bookcity is an eco-friendly city born out of the criticism that the excess consumption-dominated contemporary industrialization model has destroyed our environment. Thus, it is determined to create a model city of culture that harmonizes nature with advanced technology and science. The natural surrounding of the Han Rivers wetlands and nearby Mt. Shimhak delicately connect together and grow in this city. Greatest effort is being made to preserve the river streams intersecting this city and the streams resident plant and animal life.

Bookcity is an education city where people are treated as human beings in a humanistic community. This means a city that is not only an appropriate model for city developments that are being newly built, but where people who live in it feel satisfied in their environment. In order to realize these aims, much effort will be made to suppressing individual desires and preparing and firmly establishing the ethics of community.
Bookcity ambitiously offers dreams and wisdom to the young people of Korea through the medium of books while holding a variety of events including exhibitions and performances.
